This ten-week elective course will focus on early and contemporary psychoanalytic scholarship on the meanings and usage of race and ethnicity (among other identity categories) for the construction of identities and the role of racism, sexism, and homophobia—all stigmatizing processes associated with the intrapsychic, interpersonal and social management of difference. We will also focus on clinical vignettes that illustrate various ways race and associated topics, in particular, are addressed or avoided in psychoanalytic treatment and enacted in unconscious racialized enactments between therapist and patient.
